Goodbye Gnome, Hello KDE

KDE has recently become my favorite desktop after several years of sticking with Gnome. Recently I saw a review of Netrunner on You Tube and was impressed to the point of installing it and trying it out. A life changer! All my work machines now run Netrunner 14.1 and LinuxMint KDE 17.1
KDE is very different from Gnome and Cnammon so I thought a book like this would be useful.
It's not new enough to suppoert KDE 4 and Plasma 5, but it's good enough to cover the rough spots. Recommended.

Did the spectrum of human physiognomies around the globe reflect the Fall of Man, the Creator's bounty, or merely bizarre beauty practices? Why did the ideal beauty of the Greeks appear to be the reverse of the Hottentots? The book contains some 50 illustrations, including apes with hiking sticks or tea cups, metamorphoses of living forms, and Apollo or Venus icons which titillated the "science of man."

Miriam Claude Meijer was born in Leiden (like Camper) but grew up in the United States. After earning degrees in Anthropology and History from the Catholic University of America (Washington, DC) and UCLA respectively, Dr Meijer taught Early Modern European History at George Washington University and the University of Central Arkansas. This book was supported by a Fulbright Grant to the Netherlands. Dr Meijer is currently researching Buffon s natural law of race formation. She is interested in the origins of western assumptions about foreign peoples."

About the Author
David Waugh is subject leader for Primary English at Durham University.  A former deputy headteacher, David worked in ITT from 1990 at the University of Hull, where he led the PGCE course and became Head of Department.  In 2008 he was appointed as National Strategies Regional Adviser for ITT.  As well as his educational writing, David also writes children's stories, including Lottie's Run published in 2015. 






Claire Warner is an education consultant for Primary English. Her recent roles include working as a senior adviser for literacy with the National Strategies, and as a senior lecturer and leader of undergraduate ITE programmes at Chester University.

Rosemary Waugh is a linguist and classics teacher at Queen Margaret's School York. She has a particular interest in the history and development of grammar and etymology, and in their evolution.

About the Author
Carey Martell has over twenty years of experience in the martial arts, having studied a variety of styles including Taekwondo, Boxing, Combat Hapkido, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Aikido, Jeet Kune Do and Escrima. He served five years in the US Army from 2000 to 2005 including one tour of duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His primary occupation as a soldier was Infantryman and his advanced education included certifications in riot training, close quarters combat and combat lifesaving techniques. He served as his platoon’s hand-to-hand combat instructor. After leaving the military with an honorable discharge he became a digital media expert and is currently Chief Executive Officer of Martell Broadcasting Systems, Inc. Carey formerly served as the Vice President of Thunder TV, the internet television division of Thunder Digital Media.

A great no-frills entry point for swordplay, especially recommended for people looking to LARP for the first time.

(Disclosure: While I won't go so far as to say we're 'close', I have had back and forth discussions with the book's author, Carey Martell. That said, I am confident enough in my critical facilities to not let that conflict with my take here)

The Lightsaber, an iconic fixture of the Star Wars franchise. Much of what helps stories craft an air of mythology (for lack of a better term) is repetition, be it both in the story or in people's tributes to its ideas and themes. This would naturally extend to mock fighting with the iconic weapon, mostly by fans who might have little experience with swordfighting.....which is where a manual like this comes in.

While officially, this is a beginner's guide to lightsaber combat, it's doing so from an in-reality standpoint, rather than in-universe. removing the lightsaber aspect, there's very little here that would easily apply to simple swordplay. If you're going into this expecting the use of the various forms seen in the stories, you'll be disappointed. It is at its core a basic no-frills introduction to swordplay. What it may lack in 'lore' it makes up for in honesty. Far too often swordsmanship manuals (especially western swordsmanship) spend too much time keeping up this air of being 'above' the reader, and as a result come off as impenetrable. This book doesn't do that, and it helps by having basic instructions and illustrations, just enough to get the point across but not enough to appear lavish.

That said, its basic appearance is a double-edged sword (pun unintended). The version I have is the printed copy of what is a Kindle book....and it shows. Reading through the pages, I get a sense that this is more suited for an e-reader than a more traditional book. Also, while it's certainly a breezy read due to its approachable nature, It ends a little too quickly for my taste.

Bottom line, this is a no-frills introduction to swordsmanship, much like the original films were for a generation. While I'd certainly recommend it to star wars fans, I'm more inclined to recommend it to anyone thinking of getting into LARPing in general, as it's a fine gateway for that.

Martially sound Stunt Combat

Stunt Lightsaber Combat for Beginners is a great introductory text to sword work with an emphasis on using "LED Sabers" -- the stunt sabers sold by places such as UltraSabers or SaberForge. I was happily surprised to find the techniques in this book martially sound, and not at all flashy which was my perception of choreographed stunt combat. Carey Martell based the work on a 14th Century manuscript, and I really appreciated this grounding in historical combat techniques.

The instruction is clear, and easy to follow, with helpful illustrations. Following this book, you will develop a repertoire of footwork, cuts, guards, parries, and thrusts. There are exercises which allow you the beginnings of choreography, but the techniques are also useful for sparring.

The author is clear that what is taught in the book is not to teach "real sword fighting" saying,

Note that sparring with a stunt lightsaber is not a real sword-fight, but it is no less real than sparring in sport fencing, kendo, or any other kind of martial art sparring. Your goal should not be to reproduce a "real" lightsaber duel, because there is no such thing. Rather you should aim to gain a mastery of stunt lightsaber combat that is fun and worthwhile exercise.

The book is concise at about 70 pages, but is in no way lacking. It would serve well for a beginner at sword work and give a solid foundation for growth.

If you are interested in learning sword combat, I recommend this book.

The Fiore awakens!

I'm hosting a lightsaber fighting seminar at a fencing studio this summer, and in putting together material, I came across this book. Oddly enough, it was another user's one star review that was the decider. He complained that the book contained legitimate swordsmanship, rather than being how to do the stunt fighting of the films, and bemoaned that the author did not present it as such. His review is accurate, except that he misunderstood the title. The weapon is called a stunt lightsaber, hence the title of the book.

I come from a kendo and historical fencing background, and found the descriptions to be fine for the intended purpose of the book, and the drawings (swordsmen dressed in jedi garb was a nice, whimsical touch) and exercises certainly would be helpful to a beginner, though I would like to emphasize that if you intend to go beyond fighting with stunt lightsabers with your friends, having a background in a relevant sword art or having access to an instructor who does is necessary.

The source for his material is Fiore's longsword manuals. The Medieval Longsword, by Guy Windsor, is an historical treatment of Fiore's work, so if you're interested in a more thorough treatment, I recommend it. Carey Martell's volume is a nice intro to Fiore's system. The book was well worth the money.

## Talk about a MONSTER nightmare!

Prior to the Goosebumps finale, R.L. Stine seemed to be focusing entirely on the horror. The last 10 books contain almost all of the series' scariest moments: The Curse at Camp Cold Lake, Werewolf Skin, Chicken Chicken, The Haunted School, and the penultimate entry: I Live in Your Basement!

Ignoring the silly name, I Live in Your Basement! is uncomfortably creepy to the very end. It's easily the scariest entry in the entire series, wasting almost no time on R.L. Stine's usual gags and punchlines. The story opens with 12-year-old Marco avoiding his overprotective mother -- (the only source of humor in the entire book, and a one-note joke at that) -- by joining his friends for a game of softball. Gwynnie, the toughest, tallest girl in the class, accidentally knocks him out cold with her bat. He wakes up to his mother's incessant worry, and from there nothing is quite right to the very end.

It starts with a phone call. A boy named Keith is calling to simply let Marco know that Keith is there with him, living in his basement, and it's up to Marco to look after him from then on. When Marco shares this phone call with his mom, there's no phone in the room, and never has been. The story repeats: He starts seeing and hearing from the boy everywhere. The unreality of it starts extending beyond just Keith, however, as friends and family start asking him about things that never happened; his doctor assures him he's going to kill him to figure out what's wrong with him (and his mom agrees, "the doctor knows best!"); he wakes up one morning to Gwynnie being not a classmate, but his younger sister.

In the single most terrifying scene in the entire series, Marco digs through the basement with his friend, looking for Keith's hiding spot: Without warning, his friend gives a big, cold smile -- too big of a smile. Her mouth opens beyond possibility, and her insides start casually pushing their way out of her mouth to coat the room around Marco. It's disturbing, and would be more at-home in Stephen King's It than R.L. Stine's Goosebumps.

The entire novel carries this confusing sense of dread, as the reader never knows what's going on until the very end. Like most Goosebumps stories, there's a twist ending, and it's a twist that veers off in a new direction, completely ignoring the plot before it. The twist ending here is, as usual, the weakest part of the story. I Live in Your Basement! is good -- not great -- but deserves some extra credit (and a new e-book edition, as it's been out of print too long!) for sticking to the series' horror roots so closely.

Obviously shocking!!!

R.L Stine has made this all too confusing. The script is so confusing. I couldn't understand it. R.L Stine has also ran out of ideas. You want to know why? His second book, Stay out of the basement, is way scarier, better script, and way better. This is confusing, bad script and a nearly exact copy. Marco, can't believe whats happening. His getting distracted and confused. Just like us. He is suffering disturbing and odd happenings, and his mum, who is a safety freak, doesn't believe him. Too bad. Too bad because the person or other who is disturbing Marco, has given the last of his warnings...

Marco's mum, wont let Marco do anything, even if it isn't dangerous. So an angry Marco sneaks out to meet his friends in a softball or baseball match. Marco feels the thud of the baseball bat hitting him in the head. He wakes up. Startled, he heres the phone ring. Answers it and heres another person on the end of the phone. A guy called Keith. And geuss what Keith says...

"I live in your basement, Marco."

Confused and in disaray, he tells his less than convinced mum. His mum doesn't believe him. Marco, with the bandage wrapped around his head, complains. But then a peculiar thing happens.

His mum says they don't have a phone, in the room where he answered Keith's strange and peculiar call.

Confusing as it gets, later on is more the same.

This deserves a one star.
