Lonely Bear is the sixth release in the Bear Bluff Clan Series by Harmony Raines and what a deliciously heartwarming treat it is! I'm always amazed by the range of emotions I seem to experience while reading a Harmony Raines' story. She never fails to evoke a perfect mixture of sadness, heartache, happiness, joy and yes, sometimes even anger over an injustice suffered by one of her characters. Some writers are born with a natural ability as a storyteller and Harmony Raines has been blessed with this talent in spades. She always knows exactly how to tug on our heartstrings, tickle our funny bone and warm our hearts with sweet romance and true love. This story is exceptionally well written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view by chapter and gives us a in-depth and well defined look into the thoughts and mindset of both of the primary characters. With this approach, I find it much easier to connect with not only the story but the characters as well. This is not a rough and rowdy, shoot 'em up, action-packed tale of adventure. It is, however, a very tender and touching paranormal romance between two lost, lonely and heartbroken souls that progresses slowly into a sweet, sensual burn. I love it!
Lovely Chloe Turnstall has lived a life blessed with an abundance of material riches but love for her has been in very short supply. When her mother died, she not only lost a mother's love, it seems she also lost her father. He seemed to no longer love Chloe and became critical of her every move. ANd the final straw is now he blames her for her broken engagement to Jerry. It's not her fault that Jerry only used her to advance his career and gain a job promotion from her father. Is it??? How could her father be so cruel? After suffering her father's harsh words of disapproval and disappointment, Chloe tries to escape the heartbreak of finding her fiance in the bed with another woman by going up the mountain at Bear Bluff for some time to think and be alone. Chloe is injured in a perilous accident and now faces the possibility of not only disappointing her father again but she may also die of exposure. Her ankle may be broken and she can't walk. Maybe death wouldn't be so bad after all. Her life couldn't get much worse, can it? Probably not or so she thinks until she hears the bear. Oh my goodness! But there are no bears on the mountain. Are there???
Handsome bear-shifter Nate has withdrawn from society and now lives in his hunting cabin away from the world. After waiting so many years, he's finally met his true mate. The only problem - he met her at an engagement party - hers. Oh no! His mate is Chloe Turnstall and she's getting married and it's not to him! What's a bear to do? Why rescue his true mate when she's stranded on his mountain, of course. Oh my! This is torture! His true mate is now held tightly in his arms while he carries her to safety and he can't claim her because she's engaged to someone else! Or is she??? And to make matters even worse, she's afraid of bears and doesn't know he's a bear-shifter. What's a bear to do??? Poor lonely, broken-hearted Nate! No spoilers from me but I will say this.... Beautiful, curvaceous human heroine with a broken heart-check! Handsome lonely bear-shifter who found his true mate but can't claim her-check! A cheating fiance-check! An uncaring father-check! An accident and a fated encounter-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and true love-you bet! That and a whole lot more! A short but satisfying paranormal romance that is both deliciously sweet and delightfully entertaining. Content warning: Please make sure you have a box of tissues nearby. You may experience some sniffles which could result in a few tears! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

What would it take to get your mate

Mate knew once he seen Chloe at an engagement party she was his mate only problem, she was with her fiance. Oh did I forget to mention it was her party. He came with Olivia as a friend. So to escape he moved on the mountain top to get away. Never did his dreams tell him he would find her again injured on his mountain top. With the ring on he assumed she was still engaged not knowing she was up there to get away since she caught Jerry In bed with another woman. Once they make it to the hospital Olivia makes it worst because she coming onto Mate and not realizing he already knows the truth but when she finally see it she feels stupid and sad because she really did have a crush on him but his bear belonged to another and she would never stand in the way. She just have to wait for hers to come. In the end it was a really good book. I hope its not the ending because Sheriff Dermont and his two brother, and mate as other brothers and let's not forget Olivia need to mates. Please don't leave us with knowing the rest Ms. Raines

Great romantic shifter short story !!

Harmony Raines and her Bear Bluff Clan tales are a must. Deep feeling characters, interesting tales and hot sex make this series worthwhile. Each can stand alone, but it's fun to see past characters again. Chloe has broken up with her fiancé after finding him in bed with another woman. She hikes up the mountain to get away from everyone and everything. Her own father blames her and has no sympathy. She's startled by a deer and falls, ending up with an ankle sprain, cuts and bruises all over and night encroaching. Nate knows Chloe from a wedding reception, and knows she is his mate, but her engagement ring stops his hope for them to be together. Nate finds Chloe on the mountain and rescues her, treats her wounds, and keeps her safe. There are bad guys looking for her, sent by her father, as She and Nate make their way down to town. Can Nate and Chloe get their signals straight and be together? Highly recommend. ENJOY !!!

This book is an excellent introduction to the field of postcolonial theory, and because it gives you both historical and more recent texts, it really gives you a sense of how the field developed and the directions it's moved in. It is a bit out of date now, but it is still the anthology I use the most, and is the one I'm putting on my syllabus for the introduction to postcolonial lit class I'm teaching. Its major advantage over Ashcroft's The Post-Colonial Studies Reader is that this anthology gives you the full text of the essays it includes - Ashcroft's reader is basically the Reader's Digest version of postcolonial theory, except that in many cases (like Spivak's "Can the Subaltern Speak") condensing the essays makes them more difficult to understand. (I own that one, too, and find it utterly useless; haven't referred back to it in years.) For an introduction to the field, you really can't beat this one. (And if you already know your theory, this contains most of those articles that you refer to all the time and of which you have tatty old copies that you can never find, so this will save you headaches!)

About the Author

Yasser Seirawan is one of the top-ranked chess players in the USA and was twice a candidate for the World Championship title. He is a former World Junior Champion, four-time US Champion, the 1989 Western Hemisphere Champion, and ten-time member of the U.S Chess Olympiad team. His achievements distinguish him as one of only a handful of players to have defeated world champions Mikhail Tal, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov in tournament play.

A Great Book

I initially had some doubts about this book. After all, Seirawan, who was the top American player for so long, played the world champions. "So what?" I thought. Many other players have played many world champions. However, I have also long thought that his game annotations in his books, in his magazine and various other places, were superb, so I thought I'd give it a try.

My reaction? WOW!! What a great book!

First, let's get the games themselves out of the way. Seirawan takes every single game he played in his career against a world champion beginning with Smyslov and right through Kasparov (he did not play Botvinnik or Fischer, although the latter has a special chapter because of Fischer's special place in chess and the special connection Seirawan made with Fischer in 1992).

His annotations are excellent. Usually more explanatory text that dense variations, they can be followed by any player, regardless of strength, and will benefit all. That alone would have made this a great book. But Seirawan did not stop there.

For every champion, the author goes into what I can only describe as a fascinating "story-telling mode." Lest we forget how well respected and well connected Seirawan was/is with his contemporaries, the stories and anecdotes that he relates are wonderful. Each champion is given an extensive introduction and discussion, while the chess politics and other events of the day are also presented to give the reader a complete sense of the not only Seirawan's opponent, but the atmosphere surrounding the games. The tapestry so well woven is a masterpiece.

The result is surely Seirawan's opus magnum, which in fact is saying something, since his works (e.g., the "Winning Chess" series, his book on the Kasparov-Karpov matches, No Regrets, etc., etc.) are already well respected.

The only thing that would have made this outstanding work even better would have been photographs. My guess is that Everyman Chess (the publisher) is not favorably disposed to photographs in their books. Kasparov's famous My Great Predecessors series would also have benefited from photos. Alas, there are none.

Be that as it may, this book should take its place next to classics such as Zurich 1953 by Bronstein and Tal-Botvinnik 1960 by Tal. It is that good. Period.

"...a vast meadow!"

GM Seirawan has given us an epic book. As a high-schooler and B player back in 1984 at the U.S. Open in Berkeley, I had the good fortune of watching Robert Byrne and Yasser during the post-mortem of their drawn game. I was standing around trying to remain attentively inconspicuous when they asked me to grab a chair and analyze with them! Who gives such an opportunity to a young, aspiring tournament player? --Seirawan and Byrne did. Years later in 1999 I saw Seirawan at the FIDE World Championship knock-out tournament in Las Vegas and approached him to thank him for having given me that chance years earlier. To my great surprise, he took me into the players' room and we began looking at rook endgame ideas that he was working on for his then latest book. Kramnik was sitting near us and Nigel Short came up and chatted with Yasser. I was a lowly NM and again was awed by Yasser's warmth and graciousness. I remember him saying to me, "Chess is like...like, lying down in a vast meadow!" This book is entirely reflective of both his love and passion for the game as well as that grace that he had shown me. He creates in this book, the sensation that you are sitting with him at a chessboard, musing over remembrances of past World Champions. There are many anecdotes which will draw smiles from the reader. While the analyses of the games are not Timman-like in depth, there is certainly plenty of analytical red meat for strong players. Additionally, we get the valuable insight of his thought process during each game. On more than one occasion he is wonderfully candid to the point of being self-effacing when he criticizes his own decisions. "What was I thinking?" etc.. This is not exactly the standard self-criticism one often sees from top-flight GMs when analyzing their own games. Yasser is human, and he happily reveals it to the reader. Of course his tournament record against the World Champions is quite impressive. This is what a chess book should be in all facets. Yasser's work is refreshingly insightful and combines incisive analysis with great reflections of the World Champions...and it is all bound by Yasser's great, affable spirit. I really believe this will end up being considered one of the greatest chess books on record! This book is a vast meadow.

Great Chess Games and Interesting Chess Stories

I am glad a chess master of Seirawan caliber decided to write a book on his games with the champions.
If you put together a top GM, a skilled (former chess editor) writer a chess personality, hard work and time the result is this book.
The book is the perfect companion for a chess player. You have the mix of very interesting and insighful chess stories and great chess games.The stories are well elaborate and give you a better understanding of the development of chess in the post Fischer Era. The game are high quality with clear annotations.These combinations make the book perfect for a light read before bed(stories) or as a tool for chess improvement( going over the games in detail).
Seirawan reveals the untold stories ligated to many important chess tournament and matches. The role played by preparation, the strong and weak points of the players as well as the politics behind critical/life changing decisions.

This book belongs to any chess player library. Highly reccomended.

Book Review – Learning Spring Application Development
Author: Ravi Kant Soni, Pages: ~ 394 (eBook font dependent)

I am always amazed at the amount of work it takes to write a technical book. The Spring Framework in particular is a universe of APIs, implementations of specifications, and custom technologies. This author has produced a quick (not necessarily just beginner) dive into a targeted set of Spring features and produced a book that nicely covers many of the most often used aspects of Spring (Spring AOP pun aside).

Design and implementation via IOC, data access via DAO and JDBC (although I briefly confused the authors use of Spring data - as data access techniques, versus the Spring Data project), Hibernate, Spring MVC and Spring Security and Unit Testing, as well as JMS are the major topics.

Lately, I have been very aware of ensuring I knew which Spring ‘Version’ was in play, and in that respect I largely assumed throughout much of this book 4.n+, but version wasn’t often mentioned (although a short and interesting history of Spring versions was near the introductions).

Standing out, I was very appreciative of the attention to explanations around the sample code. Often, technical books run page after page of code, without breaking up the content with the very nice use of explanations, definitions and use cases found here.

A good Spring core reference book, I much enjoyed the authors perspective and conclusions.

Mortimer Chambers is a Professor of History at the University of California at Los Angeles. He was a Rhodes scholar from 1949 to 1952 and received an M.A. from Wadham College, Oxford, in 1955 after obtaining his doctorate from Harvard University in 1954. He has taught at Harvard University (1954-1955) and the University of Chicago (1955-1958). A specialist in Greek and Roman history, he is a co-author of Aristotle�s History of Athenian Democracy (1962), editor of a series of essays entitled The Fall of Rome (1963), and author of Georg Busolt: His Career in His Letters (1990) and of Staat der Athener, a German translation and commentary to Aristotle�s Constitution of the Athenians (1990). He has edited Greek texts of the latter work (1986) and of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia (1993). He has contributed articles to the American Historical Review and Classical Philology as well as other journals, both in America and in Europe.. . . .

Barbara Hanawalt is a professor of history at the University of Minnesota and the author of numerous books and articles on the social and cultural history of The Middle Ages. Lisa Tiersten is Associate Professor of History at Barnard College, Columbia University. She received her Ph.D. at Yale University and has taught at Wellesley College and Barnard College. She has been the recipient of a Chateaubriand Fellowship, a French Historical Studies Society Fellowship, and a Getty Fellowship. She also received the Emily Gregory Teaching Award at Barnard College in 1996. Her publications include Marianne in the Market: Envisioning Consumer Society in Fin-de-si�cle France (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2001). She is currently at work on a history of bankruptcy and the culture of credit in modern France, entitled Terms of Trade: The Capitalist Imagination in Modern France, and on an edited volume on the comparative history of children�s rights in twentieth-century Europe. Her research interests include modern France, gender, consumer culture, empire, and the comparative culture of capitalism.

Bought it for class

I bought this textbook for a college history class. This is the worst textbook! Dates in it rarely match what you find elsewhere. You finish reading a section, thinking you're going on to the next time period, when you really just go on to a different aspect of that same period. I don't like the way it is organized at all. Even the items in the index are off. I would want to find more information about a subject, so I'd look stuff up in the index, which would not even list the page that I had just found it on. I had to resort to a LOT of internet research for the class that required this book.
